United Technologies Center

The following organizations, contests, and council and society are available to all United Technologies Center's students. Students growth from participation is unmeasurable. Involvement has brought about college scholarships, jobs and other surprising opportunities.

SkillsUSA -- All students enrolled at UTC are eligible to participate in SkillsUSA, a national organization of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to prepare America's high performance workers in career and technical occupations.  SkillsUSA emphasizes total quality work - high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work.  Its programs help to establish industry standards for job skill training in the lab and classroom and promote community service.  SkillsUSA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills in over 70 different areas.  These competitions are designed, administered, and judged by industry representatives, with scholarships and equipment prizes awarded to medalists.  First place winners in the State competition go on to compete at the National Championships. UTC has been proud to host the State Competition for the past several years. 

Ford/AAA Trouble-Shooting Contest  --  State and National level competitions are open to high school senior students from the Automotive Diagnostics and Automotive Suspensions & Control programs.  The competition is comprised of two parts: 1) an ASE style written exam, and 2) trouble-shooting and repairing a new vehicle with specific problems.  The team with the highest combined score wins.  State level prizes include college scholarships, tools and an opportunity to compete at the National level. 

ABC Craft Championships -- All students in construction-related programs have the opportunity to participate in the Annual Craft Championships which is sponsored by the Downeast Construction Education Foundation, a charitable trust established by Associated Builders and Contractors of Maine (ABC) to help career and technical education institutions educate the next generation of construction craft professionals.  The Craft Championships include competitions and demonstrations in over thirty hands-on activities, including state-of-the-art advanced technologies. 

National FFA Organization - Students in the Environmental Horticulture program may participate in this dynamic youth organization which prepares students for premier leadership and career success in global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources industries.  Opportunities for leadership and skill development encompass production farming, agribusiness, forestry, biotechnology, marketing and food processing.  Students may participate in the Agriscience Fair which includes competitions and demonstrations in 5 categories:  Biochemistry/Microbiology/Food Science, Environmental Science, Animal Science, Plant and Soil Science, and Mechanical/Agricultural Engineering Science. 

FIRST Robotics - Students in the Electronics Robotics Engineering program have the opportunity to participate in the national First Robotics Competition Program.  Partnering with engineering students from the University of Maine, over a period of 6 weeks the team utilizes the principles of computer programming, robotics engineering and design, web design, and new technologies to build and operate a robot which will perform specific tasks in a 3-day regional competition in Boston.  In addition to technical skills, leadership, teamwork, creativity, and problem solving are emphasized.  

Student Council - The Student Council at United Technologies Center (UTC) provides an opportunity for students to form and engage leadership skills while impacting the school culture.  The Council was formed by students and is run by students with guidance from a staff advisor.  Student Council members are Juniors and Seniors from any of the sending high schools enrolled in any of the programs at UTC.  Officers are chosen by the group.  Activities have included helping with school tours, organizing blood-drives, publicizing school activities, and planning a social event.  Community service and targeted fundraising provide a way for students to interact with other fellow students at UTC while accomplishing helpful goals. 

National Technical Honor Society - The National Technical Honor Society is acknowledged internationally by industry and education as the leader in recognition of outstanding student achievement in career and technical education.  The NTHS mission is to publicly recognize outstanding career and technical students who are committed to excellence, values, citizenship, and achievement.  Its vision is to advance excellence in career and technical education, and raise the bar for student achievement.  To be eligible for membership in the UTC Chapter of the NTHS, each student must be recommended by one or more faculty or staff, have a cumulative grade point average of 87 or higher in all high school classes, have a minimum grade point average of 93 in their UTC program, have a definitive technical career goal, and be an honest, responsible student-citizen committed to personal and professional excellence as demonstrated by the highest standards of conduct, attendance, achievement, and community service.
